PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE

Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, was established on 3rd April 1964 under the inspiration of the Catholic Diocese of Palai managed by Major Archiepiscopal Marth Mariam Archdecon Pilgrim Church, Kuravilangad. True to the Christian values, the College stands for ensuring equity access to academic excellence, facilitating opportunities for the poor and the marginalized to better equip them to come to the mainstream. Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It is recognized under section 2(f) and 12 B of the UGC Act 1956. The great visionaries, H. E. Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the then Bishop of the Diocese of Palai and Rev. Fr. Paul Alappattu, the then Vicar of St. Mary’s Forane Church, Kuravilangad, who spearheaded the founding of the College, had in their minds the glorious task of dispelling darkness and spreading the light of true wisdom all around, irrespective of caste, creed, language or religion through the dissemination of knowledge and other skills that would mould the young generation into exemplary citizens well equipped to face the challenges of the times. True to its vision and mission, the College today has emerged as a knowledge hub and a leading centre of academic excellence, educating and transforming thousands of students who hail from a purely Agrarian-Rural background.

Situated in a rural milieu, in the heart of a minority community, the College aims at academic excellence in all spheres of learning, providing intellectual, moral, social, cultural and spiritual guidance to the young generation with a view to making them God-fearing, patriotic, altruistic and self-confident in life. Located beside the Major Archiepiscopal Marth Mariam Archdecon Pilgrim Church at Kuravilangad, in Kottayam District on a lush green eco-friendly campus of 12.5 acres/ 56585sq.mts, the College houses 8 Post Graduate Programmes, 11 Graduate Programmes and two Doctoral Programmes in Malayalam and English. The College is currently guided by the able leadership of H. E. Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt as its Patron, Archpriest Very Rev. Dr. Thomas Menachery as its Manager and Dr. Sunil C. Mathew as its Principal.

Driven by its motto “Truth will make you free”, the mission of Deva Matha College is to educate young men and women within a framework of liberal and moral values, to equip them to excel in the service of the nation and to attain optimum personal fulfilment by leading a value based life. The institution activates and achieves its vision and mission through well planned, innovatively executed curricular, co-curricular, extra–curricular activities as well as extension and outreach programmes. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), along with the College Council and PTA, regularly evaluate the activities of the College; formulate and implement strategies to achieve the goals and objectives of the institution. The unconditional support and cooperation of the entire stakeholders has been imperative in enabling the institution to strive for functional excellence.

Academic Excellence & Infrastructure

Aiming at the empowerment and holistic development of the student community, the College offers many enrichment programmes like life orientation classes, career guidance, value education classes, computer literacy programmes such as Diploma in Computer Application, personality development classes, soft skills training, yoga training, training programme for quiz competitions, Walk with Scholar Programme, Scholar Support Programme, Coaching classes for competitive examination like NET/JRF / IBPS Examinations etc, foreign language classes, remedial and bridge courses. The College has distinguished itself in research and consultancy activities. Out of the 51 permanent teachers 29 hold Ph.D and 23 hold M.Phil. degrees and many are pursuing research Ph.D part time. In addition, 4 Ph.D holders and 4 M.Phil holders are serving in the self-financing UG & PG Departments.

The infrastructural facilities of the College play a vital role in the achievement of Institutional objectives. The buildings and other infrastructural facilities are well-maintained and used optimally. The College has a very spacious auditorium, rich library, air conditioned E-Learning Centre, ICT enabled class rooms, seminar halls, conference hall, air-conditioned multi-media hall, well equipped labs, IQAC office, VIP Lounge, yoga and health club, canteen, reprographic centre, Co-operative store, computer centers, counselling facility, hostels, indoor and outdoor game facilities and chapel for the use and benefit of students.

College has an empathetic approach of support towards differently abled students. Staff guides and designated mentors offer mentoring to students personally. The College is giving more emphasis on encouraging peer teaching, cross teaching, introducing field work and internships, institutionalizing faculty appraisal, experimenting modern teaching methods, and so on.

The College has a structured mechanism for career guidance and placement of its students. Finishing school programmes and skill and job oriented training sessions are conducted to enhance employability skills of the students. The NCC/NSS of the College has long record of meritorious contribution in extension activities with enthusiastic participation of the student community. The College provides a platform to the students for community work and developing in them a sense of involvement in the task of nation building. Apart from these, variety of activities are organized every year to channelize the energy and idealism of the younger generation into creative pursuits. The College has initiated a handful of worthy initiatives ever since its inception augmenting its journey to be a change maker in fostering academic excellence in all aspects of learning, spanning across intellectual, moral, social, cultural and spiritual orientation to the younger generation.
